Oturu School Join the Zoofari Programme

Students from Oturu School (Kaitaia, Northland) have joined the ever growing list of pupils participating in the Zoofari Programme. The children many of whom had never gone to the zoo before had been learning about animal wellbeing - hauora kararehe in school and were very excited to experience all the zoo has to offer. The students wrote very compelling letters to Laura Rayner (the Auckland Zoo team leader for schools programmes) stating why they wanted to go to the Zoo and what they wanted to learn and why.

“These amazing young children are clearly passionate about animals and the environment, and many of them had never been to the zoo before, so it was fantastic that we could offer them this unique, enriching experience to connect with and grow their love for wildlife.” -Laura Rayner

Two weeks ago they got their wish. 45 students in year 5 and 6 went to the zoo. They learned about the different animals, how to look after them, they made their own 3D enclosures with enrichments and even got to stay in the Old Elephant House overnight. Thanks to your kind donations at the checkouts students like Teejhan Tatana can continue to experience the magic of the Zoo.
