We've been carbon neutral since 2019 and were the third major global retailer and first large company in New Zealand to achieve this status.
Our target is to reduce emissions by 32 percent by 2030 (from our 2015 base level). This is in keeping with the target set by the 2015 Paris Agreement of staying within 2⁰C of warming, based on pre-industrial levels.
Our carbon neutrality relies on us reducing our operational carbon emissions and investing in Gold Standard credits, which are achieved through clean technology and social impact initiatives in countries where we operate, including India, China and Bangladesh. Social impacts can include increasing employment opportunities, improving infrastructure and health outcomes.
Projects have included a large scale solar project in Rajasthan, India, investment in safer, low-smoke cooking stoves that emit fewer toxins, improving the health of women and children in Bangladesh, and investing in solar technology to raise indoor air quality and living conditions for households in China’s poorest regions.
Our carbon neutrality status is independently certified carboNZero by ToiTu Envirocare, a wholly owned subsidiary of Manaaki Whenua - Landcare Research, and is based on International Standards Organisation (ISO) standards.
Our emissions reporting meets the requirements of the carboNZero certification and is in accordance with the methodology described in the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol and ISO 14064 standards. These global standards define that our responsibility begins at the point at which we take ownership of goods to the point at which we sell them to our customers.
