Proving to be a great success throughout the North Island, The Warehouse has expanded the Soft Plastics Recycling Scheme to another 13 stores across our network, seven of which will now be in Christchurch.
The additional stores mean that we now have a total of 27 stores which are part of the program.
Since first launching in our stores in October 2015, close to 15.5 million individual units of soft plastic have been collected to date and diverted from landfill. That equates to nearly 70 tonnes.
The Warehouse Group Chief Sustainability Officer, David Benattar, says “we are committed to operating in a sustainable, environmentally friendly way and our Soft Plastic Recycling participation promotes the reduction of plastic waste and turns it into functional, sustainable products.
Plastics collected through the program go to 2nd Life Plastics and Future Post, who convert them to cable covers, garden edging and fence posts for farming and agriculture.
The scheme is available now at the following stores in the South Island: Hornby, Riccarton, Barrington, South City, Eastgate, Northlands and Belfast.
The North Island store expansion will be completed by end of April 2021, and will include Hillcrest in the Waikato, Petone, Porirua, and Upper Hutt in the Wellington region, and Pakuranga and Lunn Ave in Auckland.
