A Kiwi Christmas in numbers thanks to The Warehouse

Enough trees to build 200 Sky Towers will be lighting up homes this Christmas as The Warehouse releases its list of what Kiwis have been buying to celebrate the festive season.

Jenny Epke from The Warehouse says that the retailer gets a unique view of how Kiwis are celebrating, because it sells everything Kiwis need to make Christmas magical.

“We’re loving seeing what people are snapping up when they come into store or buy online, and since November we’ve seen a 400% increase in Christmas related search terms on our website.”

It was wrapping paper and advent calendars that first got Kiwis’ attention, before trees and decorations became the top Christmas related search terms online. This translated in store as well, with The Warehouse selling enough Christmas trees this year to run the length of 200 Sky Towers and selling enough lights to wrap the whole of New Zealand (including Stewart Island!).

The Warehouse’s grocery offering has been a big favourite for Kiwis in the lead up to Christmas and across 2023, with Cadbury Favourites and the classic Scorched Almonds flying off the shelves and into the hands of families across the motu.

“This Christmas period, we've sold enough bread to make 2.5 million cheese toasties,” says Epke, “and Kiwis are also loving our $3 everyday low price on Bell and Dilmah tea so much that they've bought enough to make over 8 million cuppas over the summer holidays!”

Over 4 million candy canes will be hanging from Christmas trees, and Kiwis will serve up the equivalent of 400 reindeer of Roses chocolates on Christmas Day.

“We’ve sold enough $4.30 Market Kitchen butter blocks to rival the weight of 200 grand pianos, enough milk throughout December to fill 1000 spa pools, and our dozen eggs to make over 100,000 pavlovas.”

When it comes to wishlists, Kiwis have favourited Glow Lab bodycare gift packs, MCO Beauty and Hi Smiles as they think about taking some time to relax and pamper themselves over the summer, and the ever-popular Barbie Malibu House and Squishmallows haven’t been overlooked either – there will be plenty of kids hoping for one of these under the tree. Interestingly the Whack a Mole game has also been on many a wishlist this year, perhaps for kids and adults alike!

And in the spirit of giving during the festive season, the wider Warehouse Group has today announced an incredible $265,658 raised by its customers alongside a $150,000 donation to three of its charity partners, The Kindness Collective, Women’s Refuge NZ and Variety – the Children’s Charity this Christmas.

“Whatever it is that Kiwis are looking for this year, they’ll find it at The Warehouse,” says Epke. “Make sure you head into store to grab a bargain, and make the most of our Daily Deals, running right up until Christmas Eve.”
